Laurel Anderson

Thank you for visiting Whisper Color. We are an online quilt shop specializing in appliqué quilt patterns.   Owner of Whisper Color Laurel Anderson is an award-winning gifted textile artist.  Born and raised on the West Coast, Laurel is well known in the San Francisco Bay area as an accomplished appliqué quilt designer.

Her quilt designs are inspired by her love of nature as seen in her flower and natural landscape designs which include trees and mountains.  She uses a mix of color, pattern, and textures.

The name Whisper Color describes the technique Laurel uses to dye silk scarves.  Laurel loves dyeing fabrics including silk scarves, wool, and bamboo batting.

Her work has been seen at West Coast quilt and guild shows. When her sons started school she joined a local quilting group that made quilts for the Richmond Rescue Mission. They made the mistake of complimenting her on her use of color. With that encouragement, she thought she could try making quilts for her family. It took three to get her hooked.

Check the Projects section for more about her quilting projects. Laurel loves hand and machine appliqué and prefers flowers and natural landscapes that include trees and mountains. She is best known for her complimentary mix of color, pattern, and texture. She loves dyeing fabrics including silk scarves, wool, and bamboo batting.

Baltimore Album and Bargello are the only quilt design styles I haven’t played within my 24 years as a quilter. Oh! I haven’t tried Sashiko stitching. But before I try those last few quilt styles I want to explore the world of alternate design sources.

Why?

Well, I must ask “Why not”?

I raised two sons past adolescence and have a daughter on her way through. I know a bit about what interests the modern teen. It is different than the world I experienced. Consider the art involved in online gaming, Anime, Manga, and Cosplay. These industries are the most common employers of artists. You can find artists in tattoo parlors and buying spray cans at the hardware store. Also, the graphic design industry is one of the most visually flexible art forms. Graphic artists stay up to date with emerging trends and color selections. Most of my quilting friends are growing gray hair. This aging out worries all the companies that sell to the quilting population. With the death of Home Economics as a required subject in school, our sewing population is shrinking. Sewing machines are extremely advanced and feature-rich. Tell your sons that sewing is dangerous and they will all want to sew. The Modern Quilt movement attracts quilters from all age groups and I hope this Rogue Quilter project will as well.
